As green building becomes more prevalent in
today’s economy, more companies are coming
out with products that will aid in the process.
Here’s a look at some of the newest products in
the green market.


Solar Power System for Flat Roofs

Akeena Solar Inc.’s Andalay Flat Roof Solar Power System places the Andalay solar system on a 10-degree slope, maximizing sun exposure, while maintaining the system’s sleek integration and performance. Weighing less than 3 pounds per square foot (15 kg/m2), the flat roof system eliminates all rooftop penetrations, attachments and modifications while integrating all grounding and electrical connections into the panels themselves. The Andalay system resembles designer produced skylights and has built-in features that cut installation time. Installation uses 70 percent fewer parts and 25 percent fewer attachment points, allowing the system to be installed in under one hour for a small house.


Custom Engineered Fan Maximizes

Energy Efficiency Big Ass Fans has introduced the Element fan, custom engineered for commercial spaces such as restaurants, shopping malls, office buildings, churches and schools. The Element’s gearless motor maximizes energy efficiency with silent, superior performance while the patented airfoil and winglet design optimizes airflow. The striking design of the fan makes a statement that helps create a beautiful living or working environment while using energy-saving green products.


EcoScreen Perforated Screenwalls, a Cradle to Cradle Concept

CENTRIA’s EcoScreen Perforated Screenwalls are available in Concept Series Profiles CS-260 and CS-660. The EcoScreen Perforated Screenwalls, made by punching millions of tiny holesacross CENTRIA’s Profile Series panels, are suited for open structures requiring ventilation, security or fall protection and can also mask building equipment and control light pollution. Concept Series single-skin panels combine concealed fasteners with a wide range of profiles based on a single theme—a dynamic asymmetrical form. Perforated Concept Series panels are thru-fastened and available in stainless steel and painted aluminum. EcoScreen earned the first ever Cradle-to-Cradle Gold Certification for exterior building products, and Concept Series non-perforated panels are Cradle-to-Cradle Silver certified.


Foam Insulation Joins Energy- Efficient Product Line

CertainTeed Corp. added CertaSpray Foam Insulation to its line of insulation products that aid in the demand for energy-efficient homes and buildings. CertaSpray is offered in open- and closed-cell formulas, creating an air seal, and can be used in whole house and building applications or in combination with fiberglass insulation, particularly in hard-to-reach areas such as cathedral ceilings, knee walls and roof decks. By reducing air leakage, CertaSpray minimizes hot and cold spots and provides comfort and proper indoor air quality by impeding the penetration of moisture and outdoor allergens. CertaSpray consists of a two-component foam insulation that is sprayed into a building cavity and quickly expands to fill every opening that can potentially leak air. The open-cell formula expands to create a soft, flexible insulation, and the closed-cell formula results in a hard, rigid consistency that provides added structural integrity to walls. CertaSpray can be used in a wide variety of applications, including interior and exterior walls, cathedral ceilings, roof decks, stairways and around windows, doors, plumbing and recessed lighting. To achieve the most rigorous quality standards and help meet Energy Star requirements, only CertainTeed qualified contractors install the product.


Integrated Solar Solutions for

Metal Roofing Drexel Metals Corp., a supplier to regional manufacturers of metal roofing, has partnered with Advanced Green Technologies, a full-service solar distributor, to create a complete thin film photovoltaic solar program fully integrated with Drexel’s engineered metal roof system. Both companies are dedicated to educating contractors, building owners, homeowners, utility companies and architects about the benefits of sustainable building products and together will provide system design, quarterly training installation programs, incentive/ rebate assistance, and engineering that includes Miami-Dade County product approvals for both the metal panels and the integrated solar system.


Reflective Restoration Coating

The Garland Co. Inc. introduced Solex, an ecofriendly, highly reflective roof coating for metal, modified bitumen or single-ply restoration. Formulated from Kynar Aquatec polyvinylidene fluoride, a water-based fluoropolymer-acrylic resin, this environmentally responsible coating can reduce rooftop temperatures as much as 80 F (27 C), significantly reducing HVAC operating expenses during the summer months. Solex also sheds dirt to stay white longer; ensures color stability over time, resisting fading and chalking; and resists mildew growth. In addition to being used to upgrade and restore an aging metal roof, Solex coating can be used to increase the reflectivity of any standard metal roof, outlasting the industry standard of three years while providing predictable energy savings with virtually no maintenance requirements.


Insulating and Soundproofing Paint

Nationwide Chemical Coating Manufacturers has added the new ENVIRO- 3000 zero-VOC, low odor, high quality, insulating ceramic, interior wall, ceiling and trim paint to its roster of architectural paints and coatings. Formulated with ceramic fillers, ENVIRO-3000 has insulating and soundproofing characteristics along with a uniform, easy-to-apply, high hide latex finish. Available in flat, satin and semigloss finishes and a primer sealer, ENVIRO-3000 can be used on most wall, ceiling and trim surfaces, such as primed plaster, wallboard, wood, concrete, brick, masonry, primed ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal, well bonded wallpaper and various other substrates.


Roof and Wall Panel with Energy Star Colors

McElroy Metal Inc. has introduced MESA, a professional builder grade panel that features a nearly invisible lap. The professional grade builder panels feature a Galvalume steel substrate and Kynar 500 PVDF paint system. The Kynar 500 coatings have been proven to provide the best protection against panel fade and chalk, resulting in long-term aesthetic appeal. While there are many products in the metal roofing industry that seem identical, the MESA panels provide the ultimate in long-term aesthetics and durability due to the Galvalume substrate and Kynar 500 coating. MESA’s almost invisible lap results in a more monolithic and attractive project that forms a tight seam that is not easily penetrated by wind or weather. The panels are available in 16 Kynar 500 colors and are Energy Star compliant, resulting in lower energy bills. Additionally, MESA panels are certified by the Metal Construction Association’s Certification program as a MCA Premium product.


Green Exterior Wall Coatings

Textured Coatings of America Inc.’s COOLWALL coating system has patented heat reflective technology that is specially formulated to reflect the sun’s heat and reduce exterior wall surface temperatures by up to 40 F (4 C). Available in 572 colors, the low-VOC COOLWALL reduces cooling costs and saves energy through reflectivity. COOLWALL can be applied to metal roofs, galvanized and aluminum substrates, concrete, masonry, brick, wood and more. TEX•COTE’s COOLWALL system maintains color integrity, which in turn extends the painting life-cycle of the coating.
