One-stop for hollow metal door and frame solutions

Architects, specifiers and other building professionals have a
valuable source
of experience and technical information about hollow metal doors
and frames.
Since 1969, the Hollow Metal Manufacturers Association, or HMMA, a
division of
the Glen Ellyn, Ill.-based National Association of Architectural
Metal
Manufacturers, has been a leader in developing performance
standards and
specifications, creating and testing hollow metal products, and
getting
valuable technical information into the hands of building
professionals. HMMA
offers architects and specifiers a one-stop source for technical
information.
HMMA members manufacture products designed for varying performance
levels up to and including detention security, as well as
fire-rated and specialty doors (sound-rated, blast resistant,
etc.). Technical data on these products is available in the Hollow
Metal Manual, containing 17 standards and specifications, many of
which are ANSI accredited. NAAMM is an ANSI-recognized standards
development organization.
HMMA recently initiated a series of Technical Notes to address
often confusing or problematic aspects of hollow metal doors and
frames. These documents have been included in the Hollow Metal
Manual and are available as separate documents. Technical
publications are being reviewed and updated on a continuing basis,
through the efforts of the HMMA Technical Committee.
The complete Hollow Metal Manual includes:

Distribution of Technical Information
Recognizing the importance of getting information into the hands of
building professionals, HMMA uses a variety of distribution
channels in addition to making the documents available in hard copy
and at www.hollowmetal.org. HMMA's Education and Promotion
Committee develops PowerPoint educational modules for use in
presentations by the committee or HMMA members at a local level.
Currently there are three modules, the Hollow Metal Manual,
Fire-Rated Doors and Frames, and Installation and Storage. Local
presentations are coordinated as requested. The latter two modules
have been accredited by AIA for online CEU credit and may be found
through links on the continuing education page of the NAAMM/HMMA
Web site.
In September, for the third year in a row, theEducation Committee
will conduct educational seminars at the Door and Hardware
Institute Show. HMMA uses trade-show appearances to distribute
technical information. In addition to DHI, HMMA was present at the
AIA Expo in San Francisco and Construct 2009 in Indianapolis.
Leaders in Fire-Rated Assemblies
With roots dating back to the early 1900s, HMMA member firms have
been on the leading edge of designing and testing fire-rated doors
and frames. HMMA 850 provides a wealth of information about
fire-rated assemblies, the testing required, and the labeling of
doors and frames. Each specific door and frame construction must be
tested and rated to be labeled and used in openings requiring
fire-rated assemblies.
In the mid-1980s, HMMA initiated a Joint Test program through which
members cooperatively test new and advanced fire-rated assemblies.
Testing is conducted through Intertek Testing Services and
Underwriters Laboratories, and participating members are able to
add successfully rated assemblies to their laboratory follow-up
service file.
The Joint Test program is expanding beyond testing of fire doors
and frames; HMMA is currently preparing to do windstorm testing in
accordance with ANSI A250.13-Windstorm-Resistant Components.
