To serve its local community, Eufaula, Ala.- based American
Buildings Co. used its design expertise and resources to create a
helicopter pad that can be used by the local community in the case
of an emergency.
After damage caused by tornadoes in April 2011, ABC implemented
new safety measures to ensure the safety of its employees and
residents in the community. In addition, ABC enrolled in OSHA's
Voluntary Protection Program, which recognizes employers that have
implemented health and safety management systems and maintain
illness and injury rates below the National Bureau of Labor
Statistics' averages for the industry. ABC also worked with local
business leaders in the surrounding industrial park to form an
Emergency Response Team comprised up of volunteers from several
local institutions including the local EMS, police, and fire and
rescue departments. By utilizing the skill and resources of 25 of
its employees, ABC created a 250-square-foot helicopter pad that
can transport employees and residents in case of an emergency. The
pad is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration and the
Alabama State Department of Aeronautics.
"At ABC, safety is a top priority," says Ron Kuenkler, president
of American Buildings Co. "We've implemented safety measures in all
aspects of our business, and now with the helicopter pad, we have
the opportunity to positively impact the surrounding
community."
