Located in Hyderabad, India, and designed by New York-based
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, The Park Hotel Hyderabad features a
highperformance curtainwall with a perforated aluminum screen that
provides sun shading and privacy for the guests, while still
allowing for views of the city.
A new flagship hotel for The Park Hotel Group, the
531,550-square-foot, 270-room hotel infuses a modern and
sustainable design with the local craft traditions, while being
influenced by the region's reputation as a center for the design
and production of gemstones and textiles.
In addition to a number of sustainable
design trends, special attention was paid to the building's
relationship to its site, daylighting and views. The building's
three sides wrap around an elevated central courtyard that can be
accessed from the hotel lobby. Protected from strong winds, this
flexible outdoor area serves as an extension of the restaurants
inside, and features a private dining court and swimming pool.
Inspired by the metalwork forms of the Nizam crown jewels, the
city's historic ruling dynasty, the nine-story hotel's unique
perforated metal exterior provides a range of transparency.
Perforated and embossed metal screens over a high-performance
glazing system give privacy to the hotel rooms, while allowing
diffused daylight to enter the interior spaces that reflect
traditions of patterning, craftsmanship and style, all while
providing acoustic installation from nearby passing trains.
The custom unitized curtainwall system consists of
high-performance acoustic glass from China Southern Glass,
Shenzhen, China, and 4-mm-thick ALPOLIC aluminum composite spandrel
panels supplied by Mitsubishi Plastics Inc., Tokyo. The curtainwall
system, including the custom aluminum screen, was manufactured,
assembled and installed by Treviso, Italy-based Permasteelisa, with
fabrication in the Thailand factory and assembly in the Bangalore,
India facility. The project features more than 139,935 square feet
of 3-mm-thick outboard, custom embossed and cutout aluminum screens
supported by the curtainwall with small aluminum connector arms.
The screen panels were fabricated and finished in Permasteelisa's
Thailand facility and shipped to the project site.
Through collaboration with manufacturers, fabricators and
researchers, this low-energy prototype building has reduced its
energy use by 20 percent, and has an on-site water treatment
facility and sewage treatment plant that processes both gray water
for reuse and waste water for release back into the city's sewer
system.
Completed in 2010, the project received the first LEED Gold
certification for a hotel in India, and was awarded the Best New
Hospitality Project of 2010 from Cityscape India. SOM also designed
many of the project's interior spaces, including the lobbies, the
lobby lounge, retail and banquet halls. With silver, gold and
gemstones throughout, the interiors continue the jewelry
concept.
