Completed in late
2006, the Antrim Civic Center in Northern Ireland features aluminum
and zinc to create a distinctive building envelope. Approved
Teamkal contractor Abbey Roofing Specialists Ltd., Newtownabbey,
Northern Ireland, installed 19,800 square feet (1,839 m2) of 65/400
standing-seam 0.035-aluminum Kalzip AluPlusZinc roof panels by
Corus Building Systems, Michigan City, Ind.
The company used
2,050 square feet (190 m2) of tapered panels to form the circular
roof of the atrium and an additional 17,750 square feet (1,649 m2)
of straight aluminum panels to complete the large rectangular roof
of the main building.
Combining a
pre-weathered zinc layer with an aluminum core to provide excellent
durability and long-term protection against corrosion, the
AluPlusZinc roof is further enhanced by the building's distinctive
façade design.
Longworth Metal
Roofing, Craigavon, Ireland, installed 7.72 tons (7 metric tons) of
Falzinc panels vertically to create an attractive yet dramatic
exterior in a traditional zinc finish. The combination of aluminum
and zinc allows the landmark building to reflect the historical
heritage of the local area while providing the community with a
new, state-of-the-art facility that includes a café and various
rooms that may be rented for events.
The new building
has also become the main headquarters for the Antrim Borough
Council. The architect on the project was WDR & RT Taggart,
Belfast, Northern Ireland. O'Hare McGovern, Newry, Northern
Ireland, was the general contractor.
