Transportation center captures design excitement and identity

After nearly 20
years of discussion and planning, St. Louis opened its $27 million
multimodal Gateway Transportation Center. The project provides
facilities for St. Louis' intra-city Metro-Link light rail system
and city buses plus Amtrak passenger trains and Greyhound bus
service. The 20,000-square-foot (1,858-m2) terminal building does
not duplicate the previous station but captures the excitement and
identity that the facility has sustained. The use of technology,
volumes of space and dynamic forms recreate the vocabulary and
sense of expression established by other significant stations and
world transportation centers.
The project utilized 20,000 square feet of RHEINZINK 22-gauge,
0.03-inch (0.8-mm) Preweathered Blue Gray Flat-Lock Tiles from
RHEINZINK America Inc., Woburn, Mass. KAI Design & Build, St.
Louis, was the architect; K & S Associates Inc., St. Louis, was
the general contractor; and David Hyde & Associates Inc., St.
Louis, was the fabricator and installer.
