Color-shifting panels connect airport terminal

Approximately 203,000 square feet of Burlington, N.J.-based Merchant & Evans Inc.'s 187-foot-long Zip Rib standing seam metal roof panels in 1.0-mm pre-weathered VMZinc from Raleigh, N.C.-based Umicore Building Products USA Inc. were installed on McCarran International Airport Terminal 3 and related facilities in Las Vegas, a 1.9-millionsquare- foot project completed in 2012.

Approximately 203,000 square feet of Burlington, N.J.-based Merchant & Evans Inc.'s 187-foot-long Zip Rib standing seam metal roof panels in 1.0-mm pre-weathered VMZinc from Raleigh, N.C.-based Umicore Building Products USA Inc. were installed on McCarran International Airport Terminal 3 and related facilities in Las Vegas, a 1.9-millionsquare- foot project completed in 2012.

The entrance side of the terminal was clad in stone and approximately 92,000 square feet of corrugated wall panels in Umicore's QUARTZZINC clads the sloping airside facing the runways to provide a maintenance-free exterior. Additionally, 207,800 square feet of Merchant & Evans Zip Lock standing seam metal roof and wall panels in 1.0-mm pre-weathered VMZinc from Umicore were installed. The project also features Alucobond Plus metal composite material panels from Statesville, N.C.-based 3A Composites USA Inc..

South Bend, Ind.-based Shaffner Heaney Associates Inc. fabricated 6,000 square feet of Norcross, Ga.-based Alcoa Architectural Products' 4-mm Reynobond aluminum composite material (ACM) with a fire-resistant (FR) core and Rose Champagne PrismFX coating for the accent walls. Additionally, Shaffner Heaney Associates fabricated 125,000 square feet of 4-mm Reynobond ACM with a FR core and Bright Silver Metallic Colorweld 500 finish for the façade.

The Rose Champagne PrismFX color-shifting finish was used to accentuate the locations of the terminal pedestrian bridges that connect to the terminal 3 parking garage. George Rosado, commercial director at Alcoa Architectural Products, said as the sun moved across the building, the PrismFX finish added variable hints of rosy hues seen in the desert sky at dawn and drew attention to the terminal pedestrian bridge locations. "The Rose Champagne color-way complements the gray-to-earth tone palette selected for the structure, which responds very closely to the materials used in the terminal 3 design," he said.

Other eco-friendly elements are glazing systems on windows to reduce heat entering the building, reflective surfaces on the roof to reduce heat entering the building and windows oriented to bring more sunlight into the building and reduce the need for artificial lighting.

Houston-based PGAL was the architecture firm for the project, Tutor Perini Corp., Sylmar, Calif., was the general contractor, Las Vegas-based Bechtel Infrastructure Corp. was the program manager and subcontractors included St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Companies Inc.; Las Vegas-based Las Vegas Paving Corp.; Las Vegas-based PENTA Building Group; and Gary, Ind.-based Crown Corr Inc. The facility is owned by Clark County, Nev.
