Façade features metal composite material

FXFowle Architects LLP designed a façade for an office building at 7770 Norfolk Ave. (7770 Norfolk) in Bethesda, Md., with a metal composite material (MCM) panel rainscreen system that wraps the perimeter above and below a curtainwall at each level. Large, sheer surfaces extend from the bottom level to the top of the building.

The MCM panels were selected to provide a smooth, modern appearance, multiple colors and sustainability to the design. The panels were shop-fabricated from a 3-D scan model; many panels were fabricated into multi-panel assemblies to combine different colors into single units.

MillerClapperton and Ornamental Metal Contractors Inc. installed 60,000 square feet of 3A Composites USA Inc.'s 4-mm Alucobond aluminum composite metal wall panels with a fire retardant core in Pearl White, Pewter, Cosmic Gray and Norfolk Copper for the 250,000-square-foot project, completed in 2015.
