Mesh arrives on canopy at depot

Working with an existing precast concrete panel bridge, Lake Forest, Ill.-based CPI Daylighting Inc. fabricated walkway columns, beams, supporting roof structure, mesh and louvers along the sides of The Beverly Depot, Beverly, Mass. The canopy was made from CPI Daylighting's single-panel, 16-mm Pentaglas, glazed in white and was required to meet a wind uplift load of 86 psf. Additionally, 1,500 square feet of Pentaglas was installed on the parking garage's top floor to bring daylight into an otherwise dark space.

Christopher Souza, architect at AECOM's Boston location, says the stainless steel wire mesh screening was challenging to detail correctly. "The versatility of the Pentaglas canopy and framing system allowed us to get creative with the concept from the aluminum louver infill panels to the custom stainless steel wire mesh protective screening," he says.

The corridor is 237 feet long, 12 feet wide and crosses over a main street. "The versatility of the Pentaglas canopy and framing system allowed us to get creative with the concept from the aluminum louver infill panels to the custom stainless steel wire mesh protective screening," Souza says.

Souza says although his company worked with CPI Daylighting on past projects, this was the first time his company took advantage of its one-source, ground-up approach due to the design and construction schedule on the fast paced construction manager-at-risk project. He says the tight space surrounded by apartment buildings and fast timeline meant designing and building the walkway required a high level of coordination to complete The Beverly Depot. "CPI was able to get us quickly over the finish line," he says.

Souza says owner Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's goal was to "[provide] a safe, comfortable and accessible passage between the parking garage and the commuter rail platform with an affordable product that would also fit aesthetically within the up-and-coming neighborhood."
