Metal braces big hangar door

A large amount of bracing was required to accommodate the hangar door and provide the wind load conditions required for a building at its height.

Jacksonville Aviation Authority requested a maintenance hangar that would allow a Boeing 767 and Boeing 737 to be housed side by side. Mark Construction Co. built the hangar with two main areas: a 69-foot-high low bay to house the airplanes and an 80-foot-high high bay to house the Megadoor and support framing.

The 113,000-square-foot hangar features Nucor Building Systems' CFR standing seam roof system and is clad with Nucor Reverse Classic Wall panels. Nucor Building Systems' TrussFrame framing system's builtup columns with open-web rafters allowed for large, clear spans. The building has a 313-foot clear span and was constructed with more than 3 million pounds of steel. Nucor Building Systems designed X-bracing at the top and bottom of the rafters to ensure sufficient support because the rafters were 12 feet deep.

The gutter and downspouts along the front sidewall are hidden by the 15-foot-tall open fascia system. Several draft curtains were installed to aid as smoke barriers along both sidewalls and the front end-wall. Nucor Building Systems' Wall Lites conserve energy and allow for natural lighting to disperse throughout the interior. Flightstar Aircraft Services LLC, an aviation maintenance company, leases the facility, which was completed in October 2014.
