Metal fits rustic theme

The owner wanted the building to look like a wood barn, but wood could not span the required width and height. Additionally, steel construction was preferable due its durability and inability to rot.

The 60-foot by 100-foot, 6,080-square-foot barn was constructed with a 60-foot by 64-foot building, 40-foot by 50-foot lean-to building and 12-foot by 20-foot front entry. The building has a 65-foot peak height and the peak has a cupola spanning the whole building. It contains a three-story play structure, supplied by Whitewater West Industries Ltd., and a concession stand.

Behlen Building Systems supplied its dark gray, primed primary framing, galvanized secondary framing, 26-gauge ADP1 metal roof panels in Gray, 26-gauge metal rake and eave trim and interior columns for the project, which was completed in September 2016.

Installation was challenging due to a lack of wind barrier; the roof's steep, 8:12 slope; and long metal roof panels. Kester Construction LLC installed an awning above the concession windows and a small roof above the entrance to the main side of the building. The interior is lined with rough sawn lumber and corrugated tin panels. The barn has numerous windows, louvers and doors.
