Metal panels work out at fitness center

Architecture firm DiMella Shaffer, Boston, specified Deland, Fla.-based Kingspan Insulated Panels Inc.'s KarrierPanel Barrier Wall System for Salem, Mass.-based Salem State University's (SSU) Harold E. and Marilyn J. Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center's exterior envelope.

Insulated panels receive passing grade for university exercise facility

Architecture firm DiMella Shaffer, Boston, specified Deland, Fla.-based Kingspan Insulated Panels Inc.'s KarrierPanel Barrier Wall System for Salem, Mass.-based Salem State University's (SSU) Harold E. and Marilyn J. Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center's exterior envelope. The system was selected for its single-component construction, build speed, weathertight enclosure and ability to produce energy cost savings as much as 30 percent compared to multipart barrier walls.

The architecture firm's design included insulated metal panels (IMPs) produced with a textured surface in custom colors developed from Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries Inc.'s color palette. The 40,000-square-foot, twostory fitness center is located in the O'Keefe Sports Complex on the university's campus. Kingspan Insulated Panels matched specifications with its Optimo Smooth panels in Sterling Silver with a polyiso-core and Urban Gold soffits.

KarrierRail was placed during standard panel installation, secured in a one-step procedure and attached with conventional panel fasteners in a one-step procedure. Expansion fasteners, called Fab-Loks, secured the exposed rail edge and ensured the system safely handles negative loads.

John Erickson, project manager at Sunrise Erectors, Canton, Mass., which installed the KarrierPanel Barrier Wall System, says the system provided a waterproof vapor barrier wall structure and insulation in a single-piece application. "What that adds to the construction process you can only imagine," he says.

Erickson says other building systems would have required more products than the KarrierPanel system including paint, Sheetrock, metal stud constructions, a separate vapor barrier and insulation. "By using Kingspan KarrierPanel system, the thermal performance of the [Harold E. and Marilyn J.] Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center is substantially better when compared to other available wall assembly systems," he says.

The Harold E. and Marilyn J. Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center was dedicated on Nov. 2, 2013. It provides exercise equipment, locker rooms, studios and two recreational basketball and volleyball courts for 10,000 students, faculty and staff.
