Metal re-roof covers school

Freedom Roofing Solutions Inc. used its Drexel Metals-certified rollformer to form Drexel Metals' DMC 200S profile with 18-inch striated pans from 24-gauge Galvalume coil from Drexel Metals. During forming, hot butyl sealant was applied. Once the panels were manufactured, Freedom Roofing Solutions ran the panels through a curver, rented from Drexel Metals.

Brian Kirk, co-owner at Freedom Roofing Solutions, says his company built a cradle for the rollformer so it could be lifted to the eaves, which allowed crews to run full-length panels with no laps all the way to the gymnasium, which was the barrel vault section.

Some panels were 50 feet long for the 26,000-square-foot project. Kirk says his company always manufactures panels with striations to mitigate the appearance of oil canning. "We run the panels with pencil ribs and we've never had any problems with oil canning," he says.

Freedom Roofing Solutions added some structural framing to the low-slope side roofs to create enough slope, to 1-1/2:12, for the new roof to more effectively shed snow and rain. Additionally, a hightemperature underlayment was installed.

Craig Boone, AIA, of Architecture Plus, says metal created a transition to the two sloped side roofs. "We were able to match the school colors and provide a leak-free roofing system," he says.
