Zinc creates clubhouse design

Zinc panels were specified to clad the exterior façade and portions of the roof on Boeddeker Park Clubhouse, located in downtown San Francisco's densely populated Tenderloin neighborhood.

Zinc panels were specified to clad the exterior façade and portions of the roof on Boeddeker Park Clubhouse, located in downtown San Francisco's densely populated Tenderloin neighborhood. Many of the 20,000 residents the park serves do not have backyards. It was originally configured in 1985. Brian Milman is partner at WRNS Studio, the architecture firm for the project, says the project was a good opportunity to make an improvement. "This kind of project doesn't come along very often in historic urban neighborhoods that have a great need for open space," he says.

MetalTech-USA fabricated RHEINZINK America Inc.'s 1-mm (20-gauge) prePATINA Graphite Grey into 4,500 square feet of Flat Lock Tiles, which were used to clad façade and steep-slope roof applications. Additionally, MetalTech- USA fabricated RHEINZINK America's 8-mm prePATINA Graphite Grey into 180 square feet of Double Lock Standing Seam panels for coping and roof applications on the 4,000-square-foot, L-shaped clubhouse.

MetalTech-USA prefabricated the majority of the cladding. Panels for the façade-to-roof transition were prepped at MetalTech-USA's facility and field-cut and formed on-site to fit. William Chiu, project manager at Pioneer Contractors Inc., says the installation initially seemed challenging for its complex detailing and flashing. "But the job actually went pretty quick and easy for our installers," he says. "The preparation was harder than the installation."

WRNS Studio, The Trust for Public Land and San Francisco's Recreation and Parks Department worked together on the project, which was completed in December 2014. The clubhouse features multipurpose rooms, administrative offices and restrooms. Park amenities were updated including children's play structures, basketball courts, outdoor adult fitness equipment, and open areas for gathering and socializing.
