Grand Award Winner
Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta
“It’s beautiful and sustainable,” says judge Rick Harlan Schneider, AIA, APA, LEED AP, ISTUDIO Architects, Washington, D.C. “Your first impression of this building is this light, airy structure that you could only build with steel. You could only do that in metal. Otherwise it gets chunky and clunky.”

Student Services Building, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Calif.
When Jeff Marshall, senior project manager at Irvine, Calif.-based C.W. Driver, talks about the Cal Poly Pomona Student Services Building, he is quick to point out that it was the largest challenge the project team ever faced in designing and building a project. As the project’s construction manager providing both preconstruction and construction services, he says this was mostly because of its unique, curved metal roof structure; a roof that he says had never been completed before anywhere in the world.

Ribbed Metal Wall Panels
Think of new residential construction in northern Texas, and brick colonials with brick façades and two-story entry foyers pop to mind. But in the East Dallas Village neighborhood, a transitional community, contemporary and modern styles have gained a foothold.

ASSET Restaurant, New York City
Stepping into ASSET Restaurant in New York City, occupants are immersed in a warm, cavernous space with a long bar running down the length of a linear space. Above, there is an illuminated, expanded metal, barrel vault ceiling, oak paneled walls and under-lit bronze bar top and drink rail. At the end of the bar, a grand metal staircase in a horseshoe shape expands the space into two floors. There are three floors in all.

610 Newport Center Drive Façade Restoration, Newport Beach, Calif.
The façade restoration of 610 Newport Center Drive in Newport Beach, Calif., really impressed the 2020 Metal Architecture Design Award Judges. As Stephen Van Dyck, AIA, LEED AP, partner at LMN Architects in Seattle, noted, “This one is just awesome. They nailed the recreation, the restoration of the design intent. It’s all metal. It’s holistic. It’s the entire project, and they really restored the original intent. I don’t think there’s anything else to say.”

Sustainable
The tension between architectural expression and building performance is never so great as in a structure that pushes the boundaries of sustainability. Civitas, the private residence on the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tenn., achieves the highest performance standards and does so with the fullest and most sophisticated sense of architectural expression.
