Tasting room and barrel storage show off regional aesthetic

Located in California’s Sonoma wine country region, the Balletto Vineyards and Winery[1] barrel storage facility in Santa Rosa, Calif., demonstrates the region’s demand for aesthetic, functional, sustainable buildings.

Completed in June 2015 and designed by O’Malley Wilson Westphal, Santa Rosa, the approximately 50,000-square-foot barrel storage facility is a combination of a custom-engineered metal building from Metallic Building Co.[2], Houston, and insulated metal panels (IMPs) from Lewisville, Texas-based Metl-Span[3].

Cary & Associates Builders Inc.[4], Sebastopol, Calif., an authorized Metallic Builder, chose four primary frame configurations for the final design, along with exterior architectural elements to enhance the building aesthetics. The primary framing members vary from single slope, gable symmetrical, gable unsymmetrical to reverse lean-to, all with tapered columns and rafters. The primary framing at the columns and rafters was shop-primed and field-painted white, while the secondary framing is pregalvanized. Additionally, the rigid frame columns are set on top of 12-inch-high perimeter curbs.

Metl-Span supplied IMPs and standing seam roof panels for the LEED-certified project. The IMPs optimize the building’s insulation, and help the project meet the California Energy Code and the state’s green building standards, while the standing seam panels have a high Solar Reflective Index (SRI) rating. South-facing single-sloped and partial gable roof planes optimize solar panel exposure, with the roof collateral loads designed for future solar.

Metl-Span’s 6-inch Tuff Cast insulated metal panels in Antique Bronze were installed horizontally and used for wainscot up to the 7-foot elevation. Metl-Span’s 4-inch CF Fluted panels in Sandstone were installed vertically from the 7-foot elevation up to the roof, where Metl-Span’s 4-inch CFR roof panels in Sandstone were installed. Inside, 4-inch Mesa Panels in White were used for interior partition panels.

The project also features mezzanine metal with PBD decking and 1 1/8-inch plywood. Metl-Span’s PBU single-skin, exposed fastener panels in Sandstone were used for the soffit applications. Individual high-side wall clearstory windows allow for the greatest amount of natural light without penetrating the roof.

According to Bob Cary, president of Cary & Associates Builders, the company originally built a vegetable processing facility for the Balletto family in the 1990s. The family business has since evolved into a winery and this new facility, which features a showroom and tasting room, also serves as a barrel storage facility.

“The tallest buildings were 40 feet high,” Cary says. “Roof panels were picked up by a jig that held onto the panels with suction cups. Some of the panels were 30 feet long, so it was a little tricky.”

“We worked through the winter, so the rainy season slowed us down a little, but that’s just what we had to deal with,” he adds.

According to Cary, Balletto Winery is the largest complex job the company has ever built. “Metallic helped make our job easy by combining their structural framing system with insulated roof and wall panels from Metl-Span to send us as complete a package as we could have hoped for,” he says. “The job went together quite nicely in the field and the owner is very happy we met his schedule for completion.”
