The 84,526-square-foot facility features two, NHL-sized ice sheets (200 feet by 85 feet), one instructional ice rink (90 feet by 60 feet), locker rooms, offices and administration space, snack area, skate rental and pro shop.

According to Frank Parisi, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, managing principal and vice president of Williams Architects/Aquatics, the projects’ guiding design principles led the team to a metal building system and metal wall panels. “The District desired a forward-thinking design reflective of the District’s stewardship mission of sustainability and recreation activities offered in the Glenview Ice Center,” he says.

The project remained sustainable by incorporating the existing pre-engineered metal building structure at its present location. “Although a challenge to modify it structurally, the design team creatively integrated the existing structure into the overall design,” Parisi explains. “The implementation was such a success that the patrons of the new facility could not remember the challenges of the old. The new facility design redefined the Park District branding with valued community assets.”

The architects specified 4-mm FR Core Alucobond aluminum composite material (ACM) panels by 3A Composites USA Inc.[1], Davidson, N.C., in Silver Metallic, Zinc and Russet Mina. Longboard Architectural Products[2], Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, supplied the wood grain metal wall and soffit panels. Metalmaster-Roofmaster[3], McHenry, Ill., installed the metal wall panels.

Parisi notes the color scheme was contextual to the surrounding neighbors while maintaining the architectural forethought of expressing the activities in the facility.

Parisi adds that an art installation integrated into the lobby design reflects the building’s architecture. “Custom-crafted metal leaves metaphorically represent a childhood experience of growing up in Glenview. The LED-lit colored glass in metal above the fireplace integrated into the tree design provides a gathering place for patrons and the appreciation of art in a building.” The art installation was designed by Elisa Boughner[4] and fabricated by Bader Art Metal[5], Skokie, Ill.
