Ultramodern Mixed-Use Complex

The new, ultramodern complex features a variety of architectural glazing systems by Los Angeles-based CRL-U.S. Aluminum[1] to help improve its function, safety and aesthetics. On the lower levels, the main entryways feature iconic all-glass entrances.

CRL DRS Door Rails provide clean, uninterrupted glass spans to complement the project’s overall contemporary aesthetic. The door rails also incorporate CRL-U.S. Aluminum’s patented Wedge-Lock technology to create extra glass holding power and a faster installation time.

CRL-Blumcraft Panic Handles are UL classified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3-2001 Grade 1, and are expected to handle the high foot traffic anticipated to enter Metropolis. And, they have an elegant and slim tubular design that maximizes views.

Due to its urban setting, Metropolis faced a strict construction schedule, and the DRS Door Rails and Blumcraft Panic Handles offered rapid customization and short lead times to expedite the project.

Trulite Glass & Aluminum Solutions[2], Peachtree City, Ga., is the glass supplier. John Barajas, project manager at Trulite, says, “For as long as we’ve been using CRL Door Rails and Panic Handles, the process of assembling entrances has been quick and easy. We normally receive their hardware within the week and are able to assemble doors in less than an hour.”

Offering in-demand amenities and services, Hotel Indigo is Metropolis’ flagship luxury hotel. The grand staircase features CRL’s GRS Laminated Guardrail System, which has clean sightlines and minimal hardware. The guardrail system improves transparency and light flow, while increasing safety, as well as incorporates LED handrails for added function and visual appeal. The CRL GRS Guardrail System complies with 2015 IBC Section 2407, and was installed by BAPKO Metal Inc., Orange, Calif. The system also incorporates the first and only ICCESR approved base shoe system, which satisfied the stringent Los Angeles Department of Building Safety LARR requirements.

Additionally, Hotel Indigo features 6,500 feet of CRL’s GRS Base Shoe that was used across all three residential towers. The hotel’s swimming pool offers impressive views of downtown, and to maximize guest comfort and safety, the area is protected by a custom-fabricated CRL glass windscreen system, installed by Azurelite Inc., Carson, Calif. The system features stainless steel posts that are highly resistant to the elements, and an integrated gate for code-compliant access.

CRL’s frameless shower door hardware is featured in bathrooms in select hotel suites and residential apartments. Suites also include CRL’s custom-engineered Top-Hung Sliding Glass Door System, which acts as a versatile glass wall that separates the living and sleeping areas, while adding contemporary elegance to the space.

Chris Hanstad, vice president of architectural sales at CRL-U.S. Aluminum, says a project of this magnitude required precise coordination between the architect, general contractor and multiple glazing subcontractors. “We are proud that they relied on CRL systems for a significant portion of the glazing scope,” he notes.
