Rush University Medical Center[4] is the largest new construction healthcare project in the world to earn LEED Gold certification. Hundreds of energy saving ideas were incorporated into the planning, construction and design of the building known for the tower’s innovative “butterfly” shape. Designed by Chicago Architect Ralph Johnson[5] of Perkins + Will, the hospital is a world class, technologically advanced hospital designed around the patient.

Our tour will begin on the first floor in the Brennan Entry Pavilion with its 40-foot tall ceiling and a cone-shaped terrarium as its centerpiece. We will also visit the state-of-the-art emergency room, a patient’s room, rooftop garden and the robotics area for shipping and receiving. After the tour, we will have a brief presentation and appetizer buffet in the Searle Conference Center in the Professional Building.

Learning Objectives:

1. Review a case study of the 14-story new patient tower.

2. Observe water conservation savings including green roofs, water-saving plumbing and capturing air handler condensation.

3. Analysis of energy-efficient heating, cooling and lighting systems. 4. Examine recycled materials used in construction.
