Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute Offering New AIA Continuing Education Course

The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute is offering an American Institute of Architects (AIA/CES) approved continuing education course titled “Cradle to Cradle: A Holistic Approach to Evaluating and Selecting Products for Human Health and Environmental Sustainability.” The curriculum examines safe and healthy materials used in architecture that were created along the Cradle to Cradle design paradigm.

The course was developed by the institute’s Stacy Glass, executive in residence for the built environment and co-author of Understanding Green Building Materials, (Norton, 2011). “Rather than focusing on how industry can incrementally become less bad, the Cradle to Cradle Certified products paradigm offers product designers a model to do more good,” said Glass. “Using a set of design principles based on the Cradle to Cradle philosophy, we will re-define the solution. This rethinking of how we design, manufacture, use and reuse materials will spur a new era of innovation and raise the standard for materials and their selection.”

“These AIA/CES-approved programs are an excellent way to bring the institute’s in-depth expertise to leaders interested in learning design principles based on the Cradle to Cradle philosophy in their daily work,” said Bridgett Luther, president of the institute. “With increased focus on healthy and safe products, restricted substance lists changing frequently, and LEED standards evolving, it can be difficult for specifiers to compare and select the best materials for human health and environmental sustainability,” Luther adds.

The AIA/CES provider program is an opportunity for architects and engineers to continue their education by taking AIA approved courses that cover a variety of building topics and issues. This course is worth 1 HSW/SD credit.
