“Housing is a human right. Build it.”

The International Union of Architects[2] (UIA) has declared “Housing is a human right. Build it.” the theme for World Architecture Day 2026, which will be marked on October 5.
Created by the UIA in 1985, World Architecture Day is celebrated each year on the first Monday of October, in parallel with the United Nations’ World Habitat Day[3].
Access to safe, adequate, and affordable housing remains out of reach for millions of people, says the union, which is why it is calling on architects to advance equitable access to housing through design, research, and advocacy.
Key messages behind this year’s theme:
- The housing crisis is one of the most pressing challenges facing cities and communities worldwide.
- Access to adequate housing must be recognized as a fundamental right. Architecture helps make this right a reality.
- Architects are called to engage beyond design practice, contributing to discussions on housing policy, affordability, and equitable access to the built environment.
- Addressing the housing crisis requires practical, sustainable, and context-responsive approaches, including the development of inclusive housing models and the reuse of existing building stock.
The UIA invites architects worldwide to engage with the theme “Housing is a human right. Build it.” through initiatives such as lectures, exhibitions, webinars, and other forms of public outreach.
Further, the union encourages its Member Sections to showcase examples of inclusive and affordable housing, share knowledge and best practices, and promote architectural education that prepares future generations to address housing challenges.
In the United States, the UIA member is the American Institute of Architects[4].
