AISC Night School 29 Picks Up Right Where School Left Off

Around the country, recent university graduates are starting their first jobs as practicing engineers. It’s exciting–but also eye-opening. They’re learning just how much they don’t know.

The American Institute of Steel Construction’s[1] Night School will give them a jump-start as they start their careers–or provide a thorough refresher for experienced engineers who want to go back to basics.

“University professors do an incredible job giving fledgling engineers a solid grounding in how steel behaves and introducing the AISC Specification and Manual that they’ll use for the rest of their careers,” said AISC Senior Director of Education Christina Harber. “But there’s only so much you can squeeze into a syllabus. We want to give them a head start as they begin to practice.”

Louis F. Geschwindner, Bo Dowswell, Susan Burmeister, and other industry experts will pick up right where those dedicated professors left off. You’ll learn all about:

• Lateral design of steel members
• Base plates and anchor rods
• Steel flexural design including cantilever and overhanging beam design as well as single angles
• Composite beams
• Load path
• Connection design
• Verifying computer analysis results

Night School 29, “Steel Design After College,” starts July 26. Participants can earn up to 12 PDHs during the eight 1.5-hour sessions.

• July 26, 2022 – Session 1: Introduction and Lateral Design of Members with Emily Gugliemo
• August 2, 2022 – Session 2: Base Plates and Anchor Rods with Adam Friedman
• August 9, 2022 – Session 3: Design of Steel Flexural Members–Cantilever and Overhanging Beam Design with Bo Dowswell
• August 16, 2022 – Session 4: Design of Single Angles in Flexure with Louis F. Geschwindner
• August 23, 2022 – Session 5: Practical Composite Beam Design with Susan Burmeister
• August 30, 2022 – Session 6: Load Path of Steel-Framed Buildings with Mark Waggoner
• September 6, 2022 – Session 7: Connection Design with Mara Braselton
• September 13, 2022 – Session 8: Computer Analysis Verification with Clifford Schwinger
