April 12 to 18, 2026, is Architecture Week! As society progresses towards resilience and sustainability, the built environment is at the forefront of this change. The infrastructure of communities makes growth possible, and this annual week of recognition allows members of the architectural community to reflect on progress and inspire continued engagement with architecture as a profession.

Educational events this Architecture Week

The American Institute of Architects (AIA)[2] uses this opportunity to host virtual events directed at the K-12 demographic, inviting young minds to meaningfully engage with the field of architecture through virtual read-alouds of texts tailored to specific age groups. The books in the read-alouds are performed by the author, before a question and answer period, inviting people in the student community to both interact with the stories, and understand the broader importance of what they represent.

Opportunities for supporting youth engagement

The AIA also encourages architects to engage with student communities to provide mentorship, firm visits, and more. With specific resources like classroom toolkits, local mentorship program sign-up portals, and versatile resources for teaching architectural content, the AIA makes engagement with educational leadership easy this Architecture Week. Through these simple actions, architects can share their experiences and help students understand the different available pathways and niches.

These efforts stimulate conversation in the youth population around what a career as an architect may look like, and how the profession has grown to support sustainable and efficient principles.
