Association of Licensed Architects (ALA) Announces Winners in 16th Annual Design Award Competition

A boldly-designed California school, a creative celebration of concrete for a company headquarters, a Chicago distillery, a far-from-expected design for a financial services firm, a dramatically cantilevered commuter transit station and a Pilsen textile center took top honors at the Association of Licensed Architects[1] (ALA) 16th Annual Design Awards, which recognized projects in 11 states for design and construction achievement. A total of 36 presidential, gold, silver, and merit awards were presented in categories that included: commercial, institutional, residential, renovation, religious, interior and unbuilt.

The highest honor, the Don Erickson Presidential Award, went to University High School in Fresno, Calif., designed by Arthur Dyson, ALA, IAA, AIA, ROBA, FARA of Dyson Siegrist Janzen Architects, Fresno. The project also won a Silver Award in the institutional category. Judges said the design was well done, noting that “the building’s architecture appears to transform the parts of the day,” and that it “creatively provides areas for students to congregate and socialize.”

“This year’s winning architecture firms showed exceptional creativity this year ,” said Joanne Sullivan, ALA Executive Director. “Our judges were impressed with the award winners’ use and reuse of space and materials and thoughtful design solutions.”

Gold Award winners included DLR Group, Chicago for Adjustable Forms, Lombard, Ill.; Sullivan, Goulette & Wilson, Chicago for CH Distillery, Chicago; KEE Architecture, Madison, Wis., for Madison Investment Advisors, Madison; Muller & Muller, Chicago for Rapid Transit Station, Chicago; and UrbanWorks, Chicago for Textile Center, Chicago.

Architects, contractors, owners/developers and guests attended the award presentation, which was emceed by Geoffrey Baer, WTTW Emmy winning producer recognized for numerous programs on Chicago architecture.

Entries were evaluated by a panel of judges, including: Pamela Hutter, ALA, AIA, CSI, Principal of Hutter Architects, Chicago; Walker C. Johnson, FAIA, founding principal at Johnson Lasky Architects, Chicago; John Moorhead, LEED AP BD+C, Senior Project Architect and Healthcare Practice Chair at Perkins+Will, Chicago; Michael J. Sobczak, ALA, AIA, NCARB, ASID, IIDA, Partner, Plunkett Raysich Architects, LLP, Milwaukee, WI; John Weigand, AIA, Professor and Chair, Department of Architecture
+ Interior Design at Miami University, Ohio.

The Presidential Award is named for the founder and first president of ALA, Don Erickson (1929 – 2006), who formed the association in 1998, and was a student and protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The ALA Awards Program was sponsored by Andersen Windows; the reception was sponsored by Moen Inc. and WaterFurnace.
