The board of directors for the Construction Specification Institute, Alexandria, Va., has voted to award former CSI President Gary Betts, FCSI, CCS, of Chicago, with the Distinguished Membership Award. The award honors CSI members who have helped perform notable services to the design and construction industry relating to CSI’s purposes. Betts is one of the few people to earn CSI’s highest honor—less than 50 people have received the award in CSI’s 60-year history. Betts joined CSI in 1984 in the Chicago chapter and helped advance the mission of CSI by focusing on improving the proficiency of the specifier and bringing an increased value to CSI’s diverse membership. In all, he served as CSI president; chapter officer; committee chair, regionally and nationally; institute director, vice-president and secretary; vice-chancellor of the College of Fellows; and chairman of the CSI Foundation. Completing his term as president in 2005, Betts continued to assist CSI, chairing two successive governance task teams, receiving CSI’s Distinguished Service Award in June. Betts contributed many things during his 24-year service to CSI, which includes:
• Forming the Specifier’s Roundtable in Chicago. • Providing consistency and clarity in the standards and formats CSI develops— such as MasterFormat—through his creative applications. • Contributing to the development of CSI’s first strategic plan. • Developing a six-week preparatory course for the certification exam in his chapter. • Creating new membership benefits and programs. Betts passed away on Aug. 17 and will be honored posthumously at the CSI Honors & Awards Gala, June 19, 2009, during The CSI Annual Convention in Indianapolis.
