As investments in high-performing, energy-efficient commercial roofing solutions continue to rise, Indianapolis-based Firestone Building Products Co. recommends that architects and building owners consider participating in the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing’s roof rating system-Roof-Point. A voluntary, consensus-based sustainable roofing guideline, RoofPoint provides a means of evaluating roof system performance over the life cycle of the building it covers, delivering a useful measure for what constitutes a sustainable roof in terms of design, construction and operation.
“While other established green building rating systems examine the building envelope and overall energy footprint, RoofPoint will increase visibility of the various attributes of a durable, high- performance, energy-efficient roof,” said John Geary, vice president of marketing for Firestone Building Products and chairman of the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing’s board of directors. “Using environmentally sound roofing solutions today will have a significant impact on a building’s long-term sustainability and RoofPoint will help building owners select and assess the best roofing systems and be recognized for their green roofing choices.”
RoofPoint evaluates low-slope and steep-slope commercial roofing systems in five categories, including: energy management, materials management, water management, durability/life cycle management and roofing innovation. Each functional area of the guideline is further organized into a series of credits based on critical determinants of each primary environmental function. Roof system assessment is based on a critical evaluation of each credit to determine if the system design, materials and installation processes meet or exceed Roof-Point requirements. This may be accomplished with a combination of approaches, including energy modeling, life cycle assessment and transportation analysis, as well as other sustainable methods.
