Kingspan Light + Air North America[1] and Solatube International[2] have launched a new digital design guide, “The Benefits of Daylighting in Architectural Design,” alongside a dedicated Daylighting Hub providing architects with ongoing insights, educational resources, and professional development opportunities related to daylighting design and building performance.
The guide explores how daylighting can reduce carbon emissions while enhancing occupant well-being. It presents a range of daylighting solutions and materials, including polycarbonate, glass, and FRP, across applications such as translucent facade systems, skylights, and tubular daylighting systems.
“Daylighting is no longer just about compliance or energy savings; it’s a fundamental design tool that shapes how people experience buildings,” said Dr. Neall Digert, vice president of innovation and market development at Solatube International and a specialist in daylighting design.“By understanding how different materials and systems work together architects can make more informed design decisions that improve both building performance and occupant well-being.”
Kingspan says that the guide uses research, industry standards, and U.S.-based case studies to see how daylighting strategies can reduce lighting energy demand by up to 40% to 80% while improving occupant health, productivity, and spatial quality.
The guide outlines how daylighting can be managed in real-world conditions, while examining integration with wider building systems, including rooftop photovoltaics, and introduces key metrics such as sDA, ASE, and UDI. It also highlights digital tools such as CBDM and BIM integration.
