Aluminum adds flexibility to complex

Completed September 2008, the LivN Nsidout Sport & Wellness Center in Simpsonville, S.C., features ALPOLIC aluminum composite panel from Mitsubishi Plastics Composites America Inc., Chesapeake, Va. The 55,000-square-foot (5,110-m2), two-story sports and wellness complex includes conference rooms, gymnasium and arena group fitness studios, cardio cinema, weight rooms, second floor indoor track and inergy restaurant. The project utilized 7,950 square feet (739 m2)of 0.16-inch (4-mm) PE Mica Anodic Clear “MNC” and 2,532 square feet (235 m2) of 0.16-inch FR Patina Copper Stone “PPS.” Both panels were used for the tower, while the Mica Anodic Clear was also used for the front canopy under the tower and the north wall canopy, column covers, and bump outs on the south and west walls.

“We selected the ACM from Altech Panel for the Livn Nsidout Sport and Wellness Complex because of its flexibility, finish and efficiency,” said Kurt Ludwickia, AIA, campus studio-director of sports architecture at McMillan Pazdan Smith, North Charleston, S.C., the architect.

 

“The façade required flexible panel joinery at certain locations to match other elevation elements allowing for a more cohesive elevation aesthetic. The marble finish on the tower panels allowed us to provide a mint green material that enhanced the building’s color palette by matching the glass and paint throughout the facility, and it provided an unmistakable accent for the entrance. Finally, the panel façade portion of the project was completed quickly, which help to shorten the construction schedule.”

Harper Corp., Greenville, S.C., was the general contractor; Altech Panel Systems LLC, Cartersville, Ga., was the fabricator; and SECO Architectural Systems.
