Casino renovation utilizes metal panels

Holland, Mich.-based Dri-Design supplied its Shadow Series metal wall panels to renovate the 50,000-square-foot Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona, Iowa, which opened in 1995. Customers and revenues declined at the casino, prompting owners to approve a multiphased renovation project. Brad Zeeff, president of Dri-Design, says although the panels have varying depths, the integrity of the rainscreen system is sound. “The substrate is located in the same plane, and the patented water management system of the Dri-Design panels stays intact,” he says.

An architectural display in the lobby near the elevators was created with the 0.08-inch Shadow Series panels in Weathered Zinc. Approximately 1,120 square feet of panels were used for the project, completed in March 2014. Waldinger Corp., Des Moines, Iowa, installed 0.08-inch aluminum panels with a Weathered Zinc finish. The Weitz Corp., Des Moines, was the general contractor, and the panels were supplied by SGH Inc., Des Moines. Shadow Series panel faces can be extended to varying depths based on the design and material. JR Senn, of Waldinger, says, “The differing panel depths really add to the panel system aesthetics.”

Shive-Hattery Architecture, West Des Moines, Iowa, was the architecture firm for the $18.5 million project. The firm intended its design of ceilings and columns in the gaming area to create a sense of kinetic motion and the installation transformed wallpapered walls into a contemporary design. The project included renovations to the gaming floor, a new high-stakes area and improved lighting and air quality.
