Varco Pruden BuildingsLocated in Toledo, Ohio, the 90,400-square-foot University of Toledo’s Fetterman Training Center includes a 71,400-square-foot indoor football practice facility with a 211-foot clear span.

Walbridge, Ohio-based contractor Rudolph/Libbe Inc. used a complete building system from Memphis, Tenn.-based Varco Pruden Buildings that includes a Rigid Frame framing system, a Panel Rib wall profile and SLR roof. The 65-foot-high roof has a 4:12 slope and includes two dormers. The roof features R-30 insulation, while the walls have a R-25 strapping system.

Named for Hal and Susan Fetterman, the $9 million project began in May 2009 and was completed on schedule and on budget in January 2010. The facility also houses a regulation-sized basketball/volleyball court and a 3,545-square-foot golf training area. The facility will be used by 16 Rockets’ varsity sports teams, including football, soccer, track and field, softball, baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s golf. The football field is regulation size and has a Field Turf surface, fixed goal posts and a game scoreboard, and is surrounded by a six-lane track, 90-foot sprinting track and jump pit. The indoor basketball/volleyball court is located in a building that sits between the indoor practice facility and arena. The golf practice area is situated on a lower level below the court, complete with driving cages, swing analysis center, and an area for chipping and putting. Additionally, there are four locker rooms and a visiting team locker room.

Designed by Bill Beauregard at SSOE Inc., Toledo, the complex features a Cool Roof that complies with LEED requirements. An unusual aspect of the project is the unique heating and cooling system that encompasses 42 geothermal wells as part of a closed-loop water system 300 feet beneath the practice facility. Requiring between 50 to 70 percent less energy than traditional systems, the wells cool and heat the facility.
