A project goal for New York City Department of Education’s Pre-K Center at 1215 Avenue X, Brooklyn, N.Y., was to create a building with traditional and contemporary building materials, including brick and metal, to blend into the urban environment. An aluminum roof color reflects sunshine and creates a contrast against the yellow and red brick. The curved metal roof creates soft lines and contemporary aesthetics.
Petersen Aluminum Corp. supplied 1,100 square feet of its 0.32-aluminum Snap-on Standing Seam Panels in Silver with a Kynar 500 coating for the 13,400-square-foot project, completed in May 2014. The Pre-K Center at 1215 Avenue X features six classrooms, two multifunctional activity rooms, offices, accessory spaces, a roof terrace and rear yard for outdoor activities. Project challenges included a limited budget and strict zoning regulations. An aluminum roof was specified for low maintenance, sustainability attributes, durability and cost effectiveness.
