Destiny USA is a 2.4 million-square-foot shopping complex in Syracuse, N.Y.

It is the largest shopping center in New York and sixth largest enclosed shopping
center in the country. It is projected to become the second most visited
shopping center in the country, second only to Mall of America.
Formerly known as the Carousel Center, the mall recently completed an
850,000-square-foot expansion that combines luxury outlets, main street
retail, and specialty stores with fine dining and entertainment venues. The
expansion included the installation of 100 custom Serpentina Waves curved
metal ceiling clouds from Armstrong Ceiling & Wall Systems, Lancaster, Pa.

The Serpentina Waves ceiling system consists of a standard metal suspension
system with a specially designed sleeve that fits over the grid. Aluminum infill panels then slide into the sleeve, eliminating the visual of main runners
and cross tees, and creating a thin 1/4-inch black reveal between panels to
provide a more monolithic look to the cloud. The 3-D clouds also feature an
installation system that uses fewer hanger wires and recesses them to impart
more of a “floating” look to the ceiling.
Four portals, each nearly 100 feet long, connect the old section of the mall
to the new expansion. To provide some visual excitement in these passageways,
the design team wanted to create an eye-catching treatment in the
ceiling.

Two of the portal ceilings feature a series of arched 10-foot-wide by
18-foot-long, 22.5 clouds running down the center of the passageway, flanked
on both sides by a series of 6-foot-wide by 18-foot-long, 75 clouds. Each of
the clouds consists of nine panels. The panels are either Champagne or Wolf
in color. However, LED lights that change color every 20 seconds illuminate
the clouds along the perimeter, resulting in an ever-changing kaleidoscope in
the ceiling that includes shades of blue, red, green, purple and orange.

The remaining two portals also feature a series of ceiling clouds, only in an
undulating design that includes a variety of different cloud widths, lengths and
arcs. Many of these clouds are also lit with color-changing LED lights. All of
the clouds in the portals are perforated and, depending on their location, some
are backed with a black acoustical fleece to provide sound control.
The mall owner is Pyramid Management Group, Syracuse; the architect
was Holmes, King, Kallquist & Associates, Syracuse; and the ceiling contractor
was Gypsum Systems Interiors Ltd., Farmington, N.Y.
