dutrow1David A. Dutrow Elementary School, Newport News, Va., is a magnet school with about 500 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The school district recently embarked on a series of renovation projects, including reroofing the school and updating its mansard and fascia.

According to Burt Kolbash, project manager with Block Roofing Corp., Norfolk, Va., an asbestos abatement company removed the existing asbestos-containing fascia panels. Block Roofing tore off the existing roof and then installed a new modified bitumen roof and metal fascia with an external gutter system. For the fascia, the crew installed 4,200 square feet of Design Wall Panels (DWF120) from ATAS International Inc., Allentown, Pa. The 0.040-inch aluminum panels were finished in Slate Blue and distributed by Best Distributing, Virginia Beach, Va.

“Design Wall Panels are suited for a number of applications, such as walls, fascias, mansards, equipment screens and some limited roofing,” explained Jim Bush, vice president of sales for ATAS. “The sleek appearance of the panels updated the look of this school and added a splash of color to the façade.”

The design was led by Roof Evaluation and Design Consultants, Hampton, Va. Pat Cherry, president of the company, said: “We were looking for a solid manufacturer and wanted a good system for this key feature. We did away with an internal gutter box, and this completely changed the look of the school. It took a drab late 1950s/early 1960s school and revitalized its look.”
