Exterior metal brings simplicity to home

The Villa Nuevo residence in Austin, Texas, was designed for empty nesters wanting to downsize and simplify. Burdened with a hot northwest slope and view, and single-story needs, the residence is oriented along the azimuth of the summer solstice to block the harshest afternoon sun. Consisting of a main house and a guesthouse, whose main public living spaces flank a large central courtyard bisected by a lap pool. Large overhangs, roof and an oculus vary sun and shade to accommodate year-round use. The exterior consists of highly durable CMU, prefinished metal siding and aluminum windows. The 8,000-square-foot (743-m2) south-facing roof unifies the main house, garage and guesthouse, protecting outdoor walkways and zones, while optimizing rainwater and solar collection. The interiors’ predominantly open plans offer large amounts of flexibility for the avid artifacts collectors’ changing layouts and displays.

Designed by architect David Webber of Webber + Studio Inc., Austin, the home was completed in May 2009, and features Sheffield Village, Ohio-based Sheffield Metals’ 24-gauge, 2-inch (51-mm) Double Lock standing-seam metal roof panels, along with San Antonio-based Berridge Manufacturing Co.’s 26-gauge Galvalume Corrugated wall panels. Roof Crafters Inc., Leander, Texas, was the installer.
