Whole Foods Market, the world’s leading natural and organic foods supermarket and the nation’s first organic grocer, opened a flagship store and the largest Whole Foods Market west of the Rockies in Pasadena, Calif., in November 2007.
The 76,700-square-foot (7,125-m2), two story building features 1,944 square feet (181 m2) of Formawall Dimension Series 22/26- gauge 2-inch (51-mm) panels in embossed Cherry Cola and 233 square feet (22 m2) of 22/26-gauge Formawall Graphix Series panels in embossed Cherry Cola by CENTRIA, Moon Township, Pa. The panels have a Fluorofinish coating.
This store was designed to usher in the next evolution of Whole Food Markets that have a larger format to help provide a more comprehensive experience for consumers. The large, multilevel building was to have a unique sense of style and architecture, created by using building products that are good for the environment. The Formawall Graphix Series panels gave a multiple-panel design appearance with only one panel and also eliminated the need for many building materials, which helped preserve natural resources. Its manageable weight also helps reduce structural support requirements, which cuts installation and material costs and saves the energy expended by heavy equipment needed to lift brick, additional structural steel and precast even on large projects.
KTGY Group Inc., Irvine, Calif., was the architect; GES Sheet Metal Inc., Pomona, Calif., was the general contractor; and Architectural Systems Inc., Poway, Calif., was the dealer.
