Gorham Elementary School in
Gorham, Maine, features an UltraCool Englert Series 1300 standing seam roof profile in Kynar 500 Hemlock Green from Perth Amboy, N.J.-based Englert Inc. to cover the rambling building’s 56,000-square-foot roof. The decision to use the UltraCool Englert Series 13000 standing seam roof profile came from the panel profile’s durability in the harsh Maine winter climate.
Lyndon Keck, a project manager and designer at PDT Architects in Portland, Maine, also specified 26,100 square feet of Englert’s H-16 wall panels in ULTRA COOL Kynar 500 Bone White with ribs uniformly spaced at 4 inches on-center with a fastening leg and lock that is concealed. Both the roofing and wall materials are LEED and Energy Star compliant. The project also included 4,200 square feet of Englert B4000 soffit material in Bone White and 2,000 square feet of Chesapeake, Va.- based Mitsubishi Plastic Composites America’s ALPOLIC rainscreen material in Bone White as the panel for the building’s front entry. All of the material was fabricated and installed by IRC Industrial Roofing Co., Lewiston, Maine.
The school features a geothermal system that circulates water deep in the ground to extract the earth’s heat. The system is estimated to save 20 to 30 percent of energy costs over conventional systems. Keck notes that the system uses the earth as a heat sink during hot weather and pulls the heat back into the building in the winter. Keck acknowledges that at some future time, the school may elect to install solar photovoltaic panels or other on-site renewable power systems to produce the electricity to run the geo-exchange pumps or other systems. Meanwhile, the pumps have the capacity to move heat or cooling resources from zone to zone as people move from classrooms into the auditorium, cafeteria, etc.
