The Hubbard Radcliffe Community School District in Radcliffe, Iowa, was a challenging project that earned general contractor Brycon LLC, Marshalltown, Iowa, an Excellence in Design Award from Eufaula, Ala.- based American Buildings Co. in the category of government/institutional projects. David Schulze at TSP Inc., Marshalltown, Iowa, was the architect on the project.
To begin work, Brycon had to demolish an existing three-story building that dated back to the early 1900s, was between elementary school classrooms and a gymnasium, and contained an operating boiler heater in the basement. After accurate demolition was completed, the new connecting link was constructed in three phases, all utilizing products from American Buildings Co. Phase one consisted of roof construction for multiple planes; phase two included construction of the sloping frame for three of the roof planes at the new front entrance; and phase three integrated the retrofit framing system utilizing both wood trusses and steel beams.
