The 20,000-square-foot (1,858-m2) Elder Maintenance Shop in Des Moines, Iowa, utilized Oklahoma City-based Star Building Systems’ StarShield Roof System and StarMark Wall System. Completed in February 2007, the project challenged designers with multiple 18- by 18-foot (5- by 5-m) overhead doors that required the use of pipe strut lateral supports in the building frame. The coordination of multiple interior overhead cranes in conjunction with a conventional framed mezzanine made the erection process diffi cult.

The maintenance shop also required an office portion to be added to the building that was separated by a glass curtainwall and used an architectural open canopy for accent. The builder and general contractor on the project was Hy-Vee Weitz Construction, Des Moines; Ace Construction, Des Moines, was the steel erector; and Jeff Schaub, Des Moines, was the architect.
