Metal roof tops fire station

Hefner Roofing LLC installed more than 14,000 square feet of McElroy Metal’s 16-inch-wide, 24-gauge Galvalume, striated Maxima ADV 2-inchtall standing seam panels in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) Medium Bronze for Tyler Fire Department’s Station 5 in Tyler, Texas. The color was specified for its similarity to traditional brass on historic fire engines.

Hefner Roofing’s eight-person crew spent less than four weeks installing the roof. Matt Jones, project manager at Hefner Roofing, says working with curved panels is a little more labor intensive than flat panels. “You have to handle every panel individually a couple times before you get it installed,” he says. “It’s not difficult; it just takes a little longer.”

The Maxima ADV 2-inch panels were delivered strapped in crates. They were unpacked, separated and curved on the job site by a McElroy Metal rollforming technician. All barrel roof seven sections were the same radius. Jones says a hoist in the shape of the curved panels was constructed to lift the panels to the roof, where they were attached to the structure in a similar manner to a non-curved roof with the same clips and seamer. Lochner/BWR Division designed the $1.7 million, 8,865-squarefoot building.
