New Metal Staircase Invigorates Art Center Building

The project at the Allens Lane Art Center in Philadelphia was to replace an existing exterior metal staircase with a design element that expressed the life and excitement inside the plain, unadorned building. The new staircase’s angled shapes create a colorful “bug-like” stair that invigorates the simple stone façade.

The open grates and holes allow light to create beautiful shadows. The project features approximately 260 square feet (24 m2) of galvanized corrugated roof and steel grates, painted perforated metal stair sides and a painted steel structure.

Kane Steel, Pottsville, Pa.; Mechanical Metals Inc., Newtown, Pa.; and Philadelphia Grating Co., Philadelphia, were the metal suppliers for the project. Hendrick Manufacturing was the fabricator and installer. Metcalfe Architecture & Design, Philadelphia, was the project architect.
