The 358,000-square-foot (33,258-m2) Atlanta Airport Marriott Hotel at Gateway Center in College Park, Ga., has 403 guest rooms and is located adjacent to the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The main entry to the hotel is a dual-purpose porte cochere that provides shelter for arriving guests and serves as a distinct visual beacon for the hotel. The curving roofline of the porte cochere alludes to the aerodynamic shape of the wings of airplanes flying above.
Aluminum panels were selected as the cladding for the porte cochere to accentuate the graceful and encompassing curve of the roofline. The smooth, tight surface of the panels provide the appropriate level of precision, impermeability and high-finish. The taunt, hard-edged skin provides the perfect counterpoint to the rib textured and painted precast concrete cladding used on the hotel’s facades. The aluminum metal panels provided a simple, straight forward and striking element for the hotel’s entry, while the two colors selected complement the hotel’s painted façade colors.
A total of 7,938 square feet (737 m2) of 0.16-inch (4-mm) ALPOLIC aluminum composite panels with a PE Core from Mitsubishi Plastics Composites America Inc., Chesapeake, Va., were utilized. The project featured 4,900 square feet (455 m2) in Bone White “BNT” and 3,038 square feet (282 m2) in Champagne Metallic “CMX.”
