Located in Bowling Green, Ky., Richardsville Elementary values green teaching, a method that inspires students to protect the environment, both at school and at home. As a result, the 72,285-squarefoot, two-story facility aimed for sustainability while accommodating nearly 500 students in pre-school through fifth grade. The project, registered for LEED Gold certification, features 6,833 square feet of Moon Township, Pa.-based CENTRIA’s 22/22-gauge Profile Series IW Series (IW-40) horizontal wall panels in an embossed Surrey Beige Flourofinish coating, and 2,744 square feet of 22-gauge, 2-inch horizontal, Formawall Dimension Series wall panels in an embossed Surrey Beige Flourofinish coating. The design team chose CENTRIA’s IW Series to provide a smooth, unbroken appearance to the exterior design while the Formawall Series was chosen for its ability to provide thermal efficiency and moisture control in a single panelized component.
In keeping with the project’s emphasis on sustainability, CENTRIA’s IW Series and Formawall Dimension Series are both Cradle to Cradle Silver certified. South State Contractors, Bowling Green, installed the CENTRIA panels. Using eco-concious products paid off, as Richardsville Elementary is the nation’s first net-zero energy public school. In addition to the high-performance building envelope that helps reduce energy costs, the building features a “solar hallway,” which includes solar-powered laptop charging stations, as well as a “geo-thermal hallway,” which allows students to see the innerworkings of the school’s geothermal climate control system. In fact, Richardsville Elementary produces more energy than it consumes, making the building a national leader in the push for energy-efficient public schools.
Completed in August 2010, the building was designed by Sherman Carter Barnhart, Louisville, Ky., while R.G. Anderson Co. Inc., Nashville, Tenn., served as the project’s general contractor.
