A nine-story, 500,000-square-foot expansion of St. Michael Medical Center, incorporates a variety of building materials including metal panels, CMU block, windows, sunshades and louvers.

Ron Laramie, district sales manager at CENTRIA, says, “One of the interesting features on the front of the building is the incorporation of our foam insulated metal panels with vertical ribbons of CMU block, which look like stone. From a design perspective, it goes back and forth: panel, window and then the vertical section of stone, and then panel, window, etc. Those details required a lot of work and coordination to provide what the architect wanted from both a design and performance perspective, as well as from a thermal standpoint.”

Flynn Group of Companies was the dealer and installer for the project, which included 81,000 square feet of CENTRIA’s 22-gauge flat Formawall Dimension Series insulated metal panels (IMPs) in Metallic Dark Bronze and Metallic XL Silver.

The project used 27,000 square feet of CENTRIA’s Formavue FV-600 window system in Metallic Dark Bronze and Metallic XL Silver, and 25,000 square feet of Construction Specialties Inc.’s sunshades in Metallic Dark Bronze and Metallic XL Silver.

Custom sunshades were used for the project. Laramie says sunshades are normally an outrigger. At the top of the window, there’s a horizontal support to which the sunshades attach, like an eye brow. “For this project, the design called for individual blades attached vertically to the window. We were able to modify our window system to accommodate the CS custom design.”

The building has 4,200 square feet of Construction Specialties’ louvers in Metallic Dark Bronze and Metallic XL Silver. The louvers are integrated without flashing, extrusion or anything between the systems, Laramie says. “The joinery of the louvers and windows fit into the joinery of our panel, so it’s all just one system.”

The project used 5,500 square feet of CENTRIA’s 22-gauge, 12-inchwide, IW-40A concealed fastener metal wall panels in Metallic Dark Bronze and 9,000 square feet of CENTRIA’s 22-gauge ribbed Formawall Dimension Series DS60 IMPs in Metallic Dark Bronze.
