Previously known as United Cerebral Palsy of Pittsburgh, the United Cerebral Palsy/ Community Living and Support Services (UCP/CLASS) of Pittsburgh was founded in 1951, and is the driving force for social, recreational and residential services for adults and children with Cerebral Palsy. The organization has expanded beyond the Pittsburgh area and strives to help everyone find his or her place in a community.
The organization changed its name and its headquarters with the purchase of a former grocery store to centralize the group’s offices into one location.
SPRINGBOARD Design, Pittsburgh, needed to design a contemporary, LEED Silver office. As a result, Cuddy Roofing Co. Inc., Pittsburgh, installed metal wall panels from Allentown, Pa.-based ATAS International Inc. The project includes 2,240 square feet of 0.040-inch aluminum Span Wall Perforated (BWS240) panels in Ascot White, and 850 square feet of 24-gauge steel Opaline (OPF080) panels in Black and Ascot White
Mark Bus, CSI, product representative for ATAS, notes: “The designers selected the perforated Span Wall to reveal the subgirts behind the panel, which creates visual curb appeal. They also needed a flat looking panel by the entrance that would fit into their budget, and Opaline met that requirement while adding strength and durability.” The metal panels also added LEED points because they provide recycled content and recyclability, as well as local manufacturing.
“The panels were selected because they were a great way to add architectural interest to the outside of the building in a manner that was relatively inexpensive, was lightweight and did not require significant alteration to the existing building,” says Bill Szustak, project manager with SPRINGBOARD Design. “The customization capabilities offered with the product allowed us to easily create a visually interesting overall form when viewed from afar, and the specific combination of corrugation and perforation provides interest up close, as well. We love how the product changes its transparency throughout the day.”
The distributor was North Coast Commercial Roofing Systems Inc., Pittsburgh, and the general contractor was Massaro Corp., Pittsburgh.
