Cuningham Group Architecture Inc. designed a project with five metal mesh sails for the exterior of Vinz on Fairfax apartment building. The mesh sails, which span from floors two through five at exterior balconies on the five-story building, provide screening and solar-shading.
Jack Feichtner, associate principal at Cuningham Group Architecture, says, “In addition to the desired aesthetic, the porosity of the mesh adds some privacy to the exterior balconies, while allowing view and light through for occupants. It also helps cut out some of the less desirable low-angle sunlight for the residential windows and balconies behind the mesh.”
To construct the metal mesh sails, Eli Industries Inc. installed 6,444 square feet of Cambridge Architectural’s mesh in the Balance pattern with 52 percent opacity. The sails are supported by steel frames attached to the primary structure with Cambridge Archiectural’s Eyebolt attachment system. Small exterior lights affixed to the top of the steel frames wash the sails with changing colors at night.
