Atlanta’s SunTrust Park has 41,000 seats and 41,000 feet of railing

Sun Trust Park, SC Railing, Metal Architecture Case StudyWhen the Atlanta Braves’ players swing for the fences this year, they’ll be aiming at some brand new fences … and some state-of-the-art railings as well. That’s because the team’s new SunTrust Park stadium features more than 7 miles of decorative railing provided by Minneapolis-based SC Railing Co.

The new stadium, located less than 20 miles from the team’s prior home, the renowned Turner Field in downtown Atlanta, has as many linear feet of railings as it does seats for its fans
(41,000). Designed with Southern hospitality in mind, the facility has plenty of space for social interaction, offering approximately 3,300 feet of drink rail that enables patrons to securely store their ballpark concessions while congregating in full view of the field.

Additionally, its dining facilities, including the Delta Club Bar and Chop House, as well areas above (Top of the Chop) and beneath (Below the Chop), all feature decorative and practical railings that maintain the proper mix of décor and safety.

Sun Trust Park, SC Railing, Metal Architecture, Case Stuy“Providing practical, yet aesthetically pleasing railing is essential,” notes Dan Stachel, vice president of SC Railing Co. “Because safety and stability are crucial properties of the railings at facilities like SunTrust, every single railing and mounting throughout the facility needs to be strategically designed, developed and deployed with form and function in mind.”

For example, Stachel pointed out that SunTrust features roughly 5,500 linear feet of 1/2-inch clear tempered laminated glass with SentryGlasPlus (SGP) Interlayer from DuPont, Wilmington, Del., which was selected for its unique combination of brilliance and stability.

Inside the Delta Club Bar and Home Plate Pub, visitors are treated to a more delicate railing comprised of a blackened steel frame with decorative bronze cable infill. Additional touches of class can be found throughout the stadium’s railing systems, such as the LED-lit handrails on the Chop House bridge and mezzanine.

In the upper and lower bowl seating areas, box suites and upper-level vomitories, nearly 20,000 linear feet of aluminum vertical picket and track railing affords patrons a view of the field without compromising safety. With few exceptions, railings are attached securely to the stadium walls or floors using Hilti Hit-Z Rods with HY-200 epoxy or weld studs to embeds or metal pans.

SC Railing was proud to work with Kansas City, Mo.-based Populous and American Builders 2017, a joint venture between Birmingham, Ala.-based Brasfield & Gorrie; Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction; Southfield, Mich.-based Barton Malow Co.; and Atlanta-based New South Construction to provide railing for SunTrust Park. Glass panels were provided by Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope, Santa Monica, Calif.
