Custom balanced doors add a distinguished touch to luxury condominiums

Ellison Bronze, A Marquee Entrance, Metal Architecture, Doors Case StudyWhen a building’s exterior shares characteristics with the likes of the World Trade Center Towers and Empire State Building, that building demands amenities and a marquee entrance. At the entrance to 1110 Park Avenue in New York City–a luxury, boutique condominium–a timeless Indiana limestone façade is now equipped with Falconer, N.Y.-based Ellison Bronze‘s custom balanced doors.

Inside are nine spacious and lavish residences featuring the finest architectural details, materials and finishes-not uncommon for a Park Avenue home and keeping with the grand tradition of the Carnegie Hill neighborhood. These condominiums command seven- and eight-digit figures and offer beautiful views of Park Avenue itself. Residents and their guests are greeted with a handcrafted balanced door, serving as a standout first impression for this elegantly designed boutique condo.

Not just any entryway would suffice for a condominium located on one of New York City’s most iconic streets. Ellison Bronze doors are made of the highest quality materials and manufactured with supreme craftsmanship. Sergi’s Images Inc., Brooklyn, N.Y., teamed up with Ellison to not just match, but enhance, the already brilliant exterior of 1110 Park Avenue.

“The quality and craftsmanship of the entry doors from Ellison Bronze are quite distinct, and set the tone for the building,” says David Von Spreckelsen, division president of Toll Brothers City Living, the urban development division of Toll Brothers Inc., Horsham, Pa. “It’s clear upon arrival that only the highest level of finishes can be expected throughout the development.”

The entrance features a pair of 3-inch-thick, single-light Muntz bronze balanced doors, including 3/4-inch-thick decorative bronze grillwork with a scroll design. The beautiful grille work is inset flush with the exterior face of the door making it appear as part of the door itself, not just added on after the fact.

The grille work is connected to the door by vertically mounted concealed continuous bronze hinges, which makes cleaning the glass an easy endeavor. Additionally, the scroll-style grille work features custom-designed, internal-latching hardware that keeps it securely fastened to the door while in use.

Unlike other entry door systems, an Ellison Muntz bronze door has solid construction both internally and externally. All parts are a minimum of 0.09-inch (13-gauge) thick, or thicker, for reinforcement where necessary.

Ellison doors are outfitted with hardware components that truly set them apart from conventional entryway doors. The Ellison balanced door was originally designed to minimize the effects of wind and building pressures acting upon it. This is achieved by moving the pivot point inward, away from the door jamb. Thus, creating an elliptical arc as opposed to the standard circular motion. This creates an atmosphere where two-thirds of the door projects outward and one-third inward, balancing the door and reducing the amount of surface area that can be affected by air pressure.

Conventional doors are designed in a way that puts all of the force on the door face as it is opened. Ellison’s counter-balancing design translates into less push/pull force and ultimately leads to a door you can open with just one finger.

The revolutionary balanced hardware combined with the inherent strength of Ellison doors allow them to operate easier and function longer. This increases the overall life cycle of the entryway and makes for a durable, long-lasting system. All Ellison doors share functionality and optimum performance, yet each is carefully crafted and customized for individual projects. This ensures an Ellison-quality product combined with a distinct aesthetic for each new entryway.

Ellison provides detailed record keeping and full warranties, which is important considering the extensive life span of their products. Since each door is manufactured in-house, replacement hardware components are readily available upon request. When done right, entryways serve as a focal point, playing a key role in an occupant’s first impression of the structure. First impressions are powerful in all facets of the world we live in-and it’s a big factor in building design too. Each and every detail of 1110 Park Avenue is carefully considered for a luxurious lifestyle-and the access point shouldn’t deviate from this theme.
