Bold and Timeless Batten Seam Metal Roofing

Board and batten metal roofing and siding has a long history in construction. In siding applications, when wood panels were first used in construction, wood battens were placed over the panel joints to provide additional weather-resistance of the materials. In roofing, battens were often incorporated into early handcrafted copper roofing to create a drainage path and to allow for the individual sheets of panels to be joined together in a weather-resistant fashion.

For this residential project, the homeowners chose board and batten siding for their new house being built in western Pennsylvania. To create continuous vertical lines, from the roofs to the walls, Allentown, Pa.-based ATAS International Inc.’s Monarch Batten Seam metal roof panel was selected, as its 12-inch panel coverage perfectly lined up with the battens on the home’s siding. The Chocolate Brown color of the metal roof panels provided a striking contrast against the lighter colored wall cladding, and was accented with brown window frames.

This metal roofing panel is a structural panel, and can be fastened directly to purlins as well as to a solid substrate. It has a 2-inch batten height and an integral lock and seam design which guards against wind-driven rain and wind uplift, while still allowing for air permeability. A vertical “leg” is formed as an extra water barrier with a structural clip hooked over the leg, allowing for unlimited thermal expansion and contraction of the system. All of the clips and fasteners required to install the panel are concealed with the batten of the adjacent panel. This ATAS Wind-Lok positive locking feature makes it virtually impossible for panels to slip apart. Installation of the Monarch Batten Seam panels requires a minimum roof slope of 2:12 and the panels are available in a 12-inch or 16-inch panel width. Stiffening ribs are standard within the pan section, although they can also be made with a smooth or embossed texture, without the stiffening ribs. Precision leveling, done prior to the factory forming of the panels, assists in a flat pan section surface. This is an important feature of a quality, factory-formed metal panel, as compared to a panel roll-formed at a construction site.

Monarch Batten Seam is available in a variety of gauges of aluminum, metallic-coated steel, and 55 percent Al-Zn alloy coated steel with acrylic coating. Available in over 30 standard colors with a 70 percent PVDF paint finish, it can also be obtained in a clear satin or dark bronze anodized aluminum. Monarch Batten Seam panels are fire resistant, and they stand up to high wind, torrential rain, and heavy snow and ice loads. An environmentally friendly roof system, the metal used to manufacture the panels contains recycled content, and at the end of the roof’s long life cycle, the panels are 100 percent recyclable. Depending on the color selected, metal roofing can also reduce air conditioning costs. Cool pigment paints reflect infrared radiation, allowing colors to resist chalking and fading, while maintaining cooler surface temperatures. Therefore, it keeps buildings cooler and reduces the urban heat island effect within cities. The use of Monarch Batten Seam panels can contribute toward a building’s LEED v4 certification in the categories of integrative process, sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, and materials and resources.

Unlike a two-piece batten metal roof system, the one-piece Monarch Batten Seam panel is faster and easier to install, which results in lower on-site labor costs. There are no extra caps or strips to install and no special equipment is required to zip or seam the panels together. Continuous panel lengths eliminate cross seams, providing clean vertical lines. The panel lengths are only restricted by transportation limitations and/or product and project design considerations.
