Product Declaration

As more and more projects are going after certifications such as the WELL Building Standard, LEED, and the International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) Living Building Challenge (LBC), the products used in the buildings become an important factor. For many certification programs, it is required to use products that have received the ILFI’s Declare label and are Red List free. Products that have achieved the Declare label also comply with the LEED v4 Material Ingredients Credit, Option 1.

Declare Label For Mfg Guide

Considered a nutrition label for products the Declare label is a transparency platform and product database. The Declare label offers manufacturers a clear and informative method to disclose the ingredients in their products, while providing architects and specifiers an opportunity to make informed choices and find healthy products for their building projects.

Products that have received the Declare label are free of the chemicals listed on the Red List, a list of the worst in class materials used in the building industry. The commonly used chemicals found on the Red List pollute the environment, bio-accumulate up the food chain until they reach toxic concentrations, and can harm construction and factory workers. There are three declaration status’ important to note on the Declare label.

LBC Red List Free

  • Declare products are 100 percent disclosed down to 100 ppm. These labels comply with the LEED v4 Material Ingredients Credit, Option 1.

Declared

  • Declared products are 100 percent disclosed down to 100 ppm. These labels comply with the LEED v4 Material Ingredients Credit, Option 1.

LBC Compliant

  • Declare products using the I10-E4 Proprietary Ingredients <1 percent Exception are at least 99 percent disclosed to 100 ppm. For the label to comply with the LEED v4 Material Ingredients Credit, Option 1, the product can only withhold <0.10 percent proprietary ingredients. Therefore, this label complies with the credit.
  • Declare products using the I10-E4 Proprietary Ingredients <1 percent Exception are at least 99 percent disclosed to 100 ppm. For the label to comply with the LEED v4 Material Ingredients Credit, Option 1, the product can only withhold <0.10 percent proprietary ingredients. Therefore, this label does not comply because 0.07 percent +0.24 percent = 0.31 percent proprietary, which is above the allowance.
