Metal's Shining Stars

It's been a busy month around here, with the judging of the 2013 Metal Architecture Design Awards and the AIA National Convention in Denver. While it took a bit longer than expected to arrive in Denver, I enjoyed the opportunity to walk around the show and talk with some of the manufacturers you see on these pages each month. Many are pushing the boundaries of design, releasing new products to help make your projects bigger and better. Others are continually updating their products and services to make it easier for architects and contractors to collaborate on a project. I look forward to seeing how these new products aid architects and contractors in how they design projects and work together in the future.

And when it comes to pushing the envelope of metal architecture design, the winners of the 2013 Metal Architecture Design Awards have all managed to do it successfully. I know I've said this before, but I'll say it again: design awards have to be my favorite time of the year. Seeing the variety of projects that are submitted each year and having the opportunity to listen as the judges discuss the entries is fascinating. Hearing them debate the merits of a particular project, its design and elements, reinforces how much I love learning about architecture and design.

With a record number of entries this year, the judges had a tough job ahead of them. As always, the design award judges--Mark Dewalt, Ron van der Veen and Sebastian Schmaling--rose to the challenge and selected this year's winners. From the simple to the complex application, metal plays a major role in each of the winning entries. This year's winners push the envelope when it comes to how metal accents the architectural concept of the projects.

Overall, the judges were impressed with the entries, noting that they not only showcased great architecture, but great metal architecture as well. The judges also noted that each of the categories was loaded with great entries, and designers really brought their A-game to the table, offering up competitive, cutting-edge designs.

Be sure to check out all of this year's winners, starting here.

Congratulations to all of the winners.
